LAWRENCE -- On the Move, a repertory dance company in residence at the University of Kansas, under the direction of Joan Stone and other dance faculty members, will travel to Courtland for a residency Sunday, March 30, and Monday, March 31.
The Courtland Arts Council, directed by Carla Kuhn, will host a dinner for the 16 dancers and three faculty members on Sunday evening, followed by home stays in the town. On Monday morning, the KU company will conduct dance workshops for kindergarten through high school students and will give an afternoon performance for the students in the auditorium of Pike Valley Elementary/Junior High School.
On the Move is on the touring roster of the Kansas Arts Commission and was formed to bring the unique repertory of dances KU faculty members and guest artists have created for the University Dance Company to towns in Kansas and the region.
The program planned for Courtland will give the student audience the opportunity to observe a range of works: a romantic classical pas de deux, a gyrating Latin jazz piece, a contemporary punk ballet, a courtly Baroque dance and a dynamic modern work. Each dance will be introduced with a brief commentary to add to the students' understanding and enjoyment of the program.
