KU to honor Phillipsburg alumnus and high school seniors in 5 Kansas counties

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association will honor David Rankin of Phillipsburg for his longtime volunteer efforts on behalf of KU at a 6:15 p.m. April 10 gallery viewing and a dinner reception in Logan. The reception and dinner will be in the Dane G. Hansen Memorial Plaza community room, 110 W. Main St., Logan.

Rankin will be honored during a Kansas Honors Scholars program for seniors from 11 Graham, Norton, Osborne, Phillips and Smith county high schools who rank in the top 10 percent of their class.

Honorees are listed below.

Andrea Norris, director of the Spencer Museum of Art at KU, will speak at the program. Kansas Alumni Association representative Fred B. Williams, president and CEO of the Kansas Alumni Association, is in charge of award presentations.

The program will cost parents and alumni $8.50 each. Honored students will be guests of the Alumni Association and the Endowment Association.

Polly Bales, Logan, and Carol Bales, Logan, are the site coordinators. David Rankin, Phillipsburg, is the Graham and Phillips counties coordinator. Kevin Baughman and Tom Baumann, Norton, are the Norton County coordinators. Philip Hardman, Osborne, is the Osborne County coordinator. Samuel Wagner, Harlan, is the Smith County coordinator.

The honored alumnus, Rankin, earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy in 1963. In addition to his work for the Kansas Honors Program, Rankin is a member of the Kansas Alumni Association's national board of directors and is vice chair of the membership task force.

The Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award, created in 1986 by the Alumni Association, honors volunteers who serve as KU ambassadors in their home communities. The award is named for Clodfelter, who received a bachelor's degree in 1941 from KU and worked at the university for 47 years, 42 of them at the Alumni Association. Clodfelter retired in 1986 and lives in Lawrence.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 85,600 students in the top 10 percent of the Kansas high school senior classes.
