KU to honor Barber, Harper, Kingman and Pratt county high school seniors

LAWRENCE -- Students from nine Kansas high schools will be honored Wednesday, April 9, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association.

The students, seniors from Barber, Harper, Kingman and Pratt counties, will meet for a 7 p.m. dinner reception, where students will be named Kansas Honor Scholars. The program will take place at Kingman High School, 260 Kansas Ave., Kingman.

Honorees are listed below.

Ruth Ann Atchley, assistant professor of psychology, will speak. Kansas Alumni Association representative Bryan Greve, director of Adams Alumni Center and Jayhawk Society membership, is in charge of award presentations.

The program will cost parents and alumni $10 each. Honored students will be guests of the Alumni Association and the Endowment Association.

Debra Meisenheimer, Kingman, is the site coordinator. Robert Slinkard, Medicine Lodge, is the Barber County coordinator. Diana Bonham, Anthony, is the Harper County coordinator. Chuck Holcomb, Cunningham, is the Kingman County coordinator. Cindy Keller, Pratt, and Marcia Suiter, Pratt, are the Pratt County coordinators.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 85,600 students in the top 10 percent of the Kansas high school senior classes.

The Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award, created in 1986 by the Alumni Association, honors volunteers who serve as KU ambassadors in their home communities. The award is named for Clodfelter, who received a bachelor's degree in 1941 from KU and worked at the university for 47 years, 42 of them at the Alumni Association. Clodfelter retired in 1986 and lives in Lawrence.
