LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas political science department honored top students at its annual Pi Sigma Alpha initiation and awards banquet April 22 at the Lawrence Holiday Inn Holidome.
Thirty-five students were inducted into the Gamma chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, a national honor society. Criteria for induction include at least junior standing in political science and a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale in all political science and government division courses. Cumulative GPAs must be at least 3.4 for undergraduates and at least 3.5 for graduate students, with no course grade lower than a B.
Special award and scholarship recipients also were recognized during the program.
Curtis M. Wood, Lawrence graduate student, received the $6,000 Joseph P. Harris graduate fellowship, which recognizes an outstanding doctoral candidate in political science.
Andrew Ray Miner, Beloit senior, received the Eldon Fields Award, and Bradley Lewis, Hutchinson senior, received the Ethan Allen Award. Each award is worth $600 and recognizes an outstanding graduating senior majoring in political science.
Emmy Lou Levens, Overland Park junior, received the $3,000 Emmett L. Bennett Scholarship, which is awarded to an outstanding junior majoring in political science.
Ruth A. French, Partridge junior, and Alvar Ayala, Torreon Coahui, Mexico, sophomore, each received the $3,000 Gustafson Scholarship. Jennifer Wade, Wichita junior; Irakli Mirzashvili, Ness City junior; and John Michael Connolly, Lawrence junior, each received $1,500 Harley S. Nelson Family Fund Scholarships. Both awards are given to outstanding political science undergraduates.
Nine students received Walter Thompson scholarships worth between $1,000 and $3,000, which are given to deserving political science students. Five students received Walter Thompson scholarships of $400 to $600, which are given to students in the study abroad program and those serving internships in Washington, D.C.
Four seniors completing departmental honors received faculty Pi Sigma Alpha awards.
