LAWRENCE -- For the second time in two years, the University of Kansas journalism school has placed among the top 10 in the Hearst journalism writing competition, often called the "Pulitzers of college journalism."
The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at KU finished ninth out of 105 accredited undergraduate schools of journalism that participate in the program.
The annual contests are funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
KU's Hearst award winners this year were:
CLOUD COUNTY
From Concordia
Lindsay Hanson, junior in journalism with news and information emphasis, daughter of Noel and Gloria Hanson; Concordia High School graduate; 14th place in in-depth writing.
DOUGLAS COUNTY
From Baldwin City
Doyle Murphy, senior in journalism with news and information emphasis, son of Jack and Rosemary Murphy; Baldwin City High School graduate; 18th place in sports writing.
JOHNSON COUNTY
From Olathe
John Nowak, senior in journalism with strategic communications emphasis and in theatre and film, son of Kent and Martha Nowak; Olathe North High School graduate; 17th place in photojournalism feature and personality profile.
From Prairie Village
Nathan Dayani, senior in journalism with magazine emphasis, son of Jim Dayani and Julie Dayani; Shawnee Mission East High School graduate; 13th place in profile writing.
LYON COUNTY
From Emporia
Adam Pracht, junior in journalism with news and information emphasis, son of Dale and Alice Pracht; Emporia High School graduate; fifth place in profile writing.
COLORADO
From Colorado Springs
Eve Lamborn, May 2003 graduate in journalism and English, daughter of Doug and Jean Lamborn; Rampart High School graduate; fifth place in feature writing.
MISSOURI
From Lee's Summit
Ryan Lee Wood, May 2003 graduate in journalism, son of Rob and Anne Wood; Lee's Summit North High School graduate; 12th place in sports writing.
WYOMING
From Powell
Michael Bieke, May 2003 graduate in journalism with news and information emphasis, son of Bob Krenz and Kathleen Bieke; Powell High School graduate; 19th in broadcast news.
