KU journalism school honors 25 top students with $8,200 in awards

LAWRENCE -- The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas honored its top students during an April 23 ceremony.

Twenty-five undergraduate and graduate students received awards worth a total of $8,200 for writing, editing, reporting, broadcasting, programming, advertising and media management. Students who received scholarships will be announced by the KU Endowment Association in fall 2003.

Awards presented were:

 • Dana Leibengood Award in Business Communications, given to an outstanding senior in business communications
 • Mel Adams Award in Advertising, given to an outstanding junior in advertising
 • John Bremner Award in Copy Editing, given for outstanding performance as a copy editor for the University Daily Kansan, the student newspaper
 • Walter Ewert Reporting Award and Angelo Scott Reporting Award, given for outstanding reporting for the Kansan
 • Gerald Funk Feature Writing Award, given for outstanding feature writing in either magazine or newspaper work
 • Paul Miner Award for Kansan Leadership, given to an outstanding student who served as editor or managing editor of the Kansan
 • Don Pierce Sports Writing Award, given to outstanding sports writers for the Kansan
 • Les Polk Award in Copy Editing, given to an outstanding copy editor for the Kansan
 • Sullivan Higdon & Sink Advertising Award, given to outstanding seniors in advertising
 • Lee Young Magazine Award, given to an outstanding senior in the field
 • John Katich Broadcast Management Award, given to an outstanding senior in broadcasting
 • Radio-Television Award, given to an outstanding performer in those fields
 • Gene Slais Broadcast News Award, given to an outstanding senior in broadcasting
 • Calder Pickett Graduate Study Award, awarded for outstanding academic performance by a graduate student
 • Bruce Linton Broadcast Graduate Award, given to an outstanding graduate student in broadcasting
 • Journalism School Service Award, given to a student who performs outstanding service to the journalism school
