KU Mortar Board initiates new members

LAWRENCE -- Fifty-one University of Kansas students recently were initiated into Mortar Board, a senior honor society, for the 2003-04 academic year. The initiation ceremony took place April 27 at the Kansas Union, followed by a reception at the chancellor's residence.

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.

KU's Mortar Board annually selects outstanding educators from KU's faculty and regularly performs community service. Past projects have included volunteering at Jubilee Cafˇ, a breakfast program for the homeless; helping Lawrence-area Girl Scouts sort and load cookies; and leading bingo and other activities at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence. Each year's group chooses its goals and activities.

Mortar Board is a national network that includes more than 200 chapters and 50 alumni chapters. More than 200,000 college seniors have been initiated since 1918.

Current KU members selected the initiates from 151 applicants. New members are listed below by hometown with their major, parents' names and high school information, if available.
