KU art history department honors 48 outstanding students

LAWRENCE -- The Kress Foundation Department of Art History at the University of Kansas recently honored 48 students for their excellence in the classroom.

Awards presented include the Amsden Book Awards, the Stokstad Awards, the Jon O'Neal Photography Awards, the Laurence Sickman Award and the Tim Mitchell Memorial Art History Awards. The KU Endowment Association administers funds for the awards.

Three doctoral students in art history -- Michelle Moseley, Florence, Ala.; Veronica de Jong, Brisbane, Australia; and Stephanie Fox, Marshfield, Wis. -- each received a $250 Stokstad Award. The honor recognizes graduate students in art history who have made a major contribution to the educational mission of the department. The award was established in 1995 by Marilyn Stokstad, the Judith Murphy distinguished professor of art history, and first was awarded in spring 1996.

De Jong also received the Laurence Sickman Award, which honors the past curator of Chinese art and past director of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo. The $900 award is given to an outstanding student specializing in Chinese art and was established in 1986.

Donald Sloan, Kansas City, Kan., doctoral student in art history, received the Tim Mitchell Memorial Art History Award, which recognizes outstanding academic performance in the graduate program. The award was established in 1994 and is given in honor of Tim Mitchell, who was a faculty member at KU from 1979 until his death in 1993.

Andrew Foat, Colorado Springs, Colo., junior in design, received the Jon O'Neal Photography Award, which is given to outstanding undergraduate students in the History of Photography class. The award was established in 1996 and is named for Jon O'Neal, a KU alumnus who funds the award. O'Neal, a physician, also is a professional photographer.

Tera Hedrick, Wichita senior in art history, received the Jeanne Stump Award, which honors an outstanding senior in art history. The award is named for a longtime professor at KU and consists of a $100 cash award and book.

The Amsden Book Awards are named for the late Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Amsden, Wichita, who started contributing to the department in 1976. Faculty members select winners based on their classroom excellence, and the students receive books on subjects related to the areas in which they excelled.
