KU releases summary of social welfare Prof. Dennis Dailey's credentials

LAWRENCE -- In response to a request from State Sen. Susan Wagle, the University of Kansas is publicly releasing a summary of the professional credentials of Dennis Dailey, KU professor of social welfare.

Ann Weick, dean of the KU School of Social Welfare, said, "It is appropriate for KU to offer a course on human sexuality in everyday life, and Dr. Dailey is highly qualified to teach it, as he has since 1979 to approximately 15,000 students."

Dailey's vita and a summary of his credentials were provided to Wagle last week. Highlights include the following:

 • Dailey received a bachelor's degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. (1960), as well as a master's degree from the University of Missouri - Columbia (1963) and a doctoral degree from Washington University in St. Louis (1971), both in social work. He undertook additional study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Social Work Institute for the Study of Sex (summer 1976).

 • Dailey joined the KU faculty in 1969 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor (1974) and professor (1980). He was also an adjunct clinical professor/instructor at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry and Mental Health Sciences, Center for Sexual Health, in Topeka (1979-96) and an adjunct professor at the Union Institute Graduate School (1993-96) in Cincinnati.

 • Dailey is certified by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists as a sex educator, sex therapist and supervisor. He is also certified by the American Board of Sexology as a sex therapist and clinical supervisor. Both are nationally recognized professional organizations for persons working in this academic field. Further, Dailey is licensed by the State of Kansas as a specialist clinical social worker.

 • Dailey's honors and awards at KU include the HOPE Award, a teaching award presented by KU seniors (1993); the Outstanding Educator Award from the Mortar Board College Senior Honor Society (2002); the Chancellor's Professorship for Excellence in Teaching (1990-91); and the Outstanding KU Social Work Faculty Award (1989).

 • Dailey's vita lists more than 80 scholarly citations related to his professional work, including book chapters, articles and book reviews. He edited the book "The Sexually Unusual: Guide to Understanding and Helping" (1988).

 • Throughout his career, Dailey has been a regular, respected presenter at regional, national and international conferences and workshops. A recent example: Dailey was a keynote speaker March 20 at the seventh annual conference of the Minnesota Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers. His remarks were on "Healthy Sexuality: An Essential Aspect of the Healing Journey."

As announced previously by KU, an investigation began in early April in response to a complaint lodged against Dailey by Wagle. Consistent with Kansas Board of Regents policy, the matter was referred to the provost by the chancellor for action. The investigation will be full and complete, and KU will do everything possible to ensure that the rights of students and faculty are protected in the process, the university said.

In the Lawrence Journal-World on May 3, referring to further charges made by Wagle, Dailey said, "Such allegations are untrue, malicious and extremely hurtful to me and my family, especially my two adult daughters."
