Student athletes give Shankel teaching excellence award to Dennis Dailey

LAWRENCE -- Dennis Dailey, professor of social welfare at the University of Kansas, received the Del Shankel Teaching Excellence Award at the 2003 Jayhawk Academic Achievement Reception on May 5 at the Kansas Union.

The award is presented by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. It honors Shankel, professor emeritus of microbiology and former executive vice chancellor, acting chancellor and 15th chancellor of the university. Professors are nominated by student-athletes. The advisory committee then interviews the nominees and selects the winner.

Dailey, the eighth winner of the annual award, joined the KU faculty in 1969. He won an Outstanding Educator in America Award in 1974 and the Budig Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1989. Dailey received the Chancellor's Professorship for Excellence in Teaching in 1990 and the Honor for the Outstanding Progressive Educator (H.O.P.E.) Award in 1994. Since then he has been a H.O.P.E. Award finalist three times. Dailey earned a bachelor's degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., a master's degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia and a doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis. Dailey has written more than 10 books on human sexuality. His current research focuses on male sex-role socialization and clinical practice effectiveness.

Also at the banquet, the KU athletics department named men's basketball player Nick Collison as its senior male scholar athlete of the year and swimmer Gwen Haley as its senior female scholar athlete of the year. Nearly 200 student-athletes were honored as Jayhawk scholars after recording a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester. In addition to these 174 student-athletes, 21 student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs last fall.

Collison, a senior from Iowa Falls, Iowa, is majoring in communication studies and is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection. Haley, a senior majoring in biology from Carmel, Ind., is a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 honoree.

In addition, the Hale Achievement Center Academic Awards were given to Curtis Ansel (football), Sid Bachmann (football), Adrian Carey (track and field), Robbie Harriford (track and field), John Harvey (football), Jessica Moppin (softball), Cameron Schwehr (track and field), Lindsey Urbatchka (swimming and diving) and Duchess Williams (track and field).
