LAWRENCE -- As part of a Veterans Day commemoration, a B-2 Spirit bomber from Whiteman Air Force Base will fly over Memorial Stadium at the University of Kansas before the Nov. 8 football game against the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.
The game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
In cooperation with Whiteman's Air Force 509th Bomb Wing, based in Johnson County, Mo., the bomber will fly over the stadium just after the KU band performs the national anthem.
Maj. Jeffrey L. Long of the 393rd Bomb Squadron, also based at Whiteman, will guide the plane into the stadium. Long was a wide receiver at KU in 1984.
Cadets from KU's Air Force ROTC Detachment 280 will present the colors before the game.
Col. Michael D. Lee, director of KU's Air Force ROTC program, said KU's Veterans Day observances would honor the men and women of the armed forces who have served to maintain freedom, as well as those who gave up their peace of mind while loved ones served.
"We honor the veterans and their families who were willing to sacrifice for a greater good," he said.
