KU homecoming: Danny Manning to serve as grand marshal

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas, which lured former All-American Danny Manning back to campus this fall after he completed his career in the National Basketball Association, will honor him as grand marshal for Saturday's KU homecoming parade, which will salute "Jayhawk Generations: Bringing Back the Classics."

Manning, who led KU to the 1988 NCAA national championship and is director of student-athlete development and the men's basketball team manager under coach Bill Self, will be a guest of honor throughout homecoming week, Oct. 11 through 18.

"The University of Kansas and the Lawrence community have been wonderful to my family and me," Manning said. "It's always my pleasure to give something back when I have the opportunity."

The homecoming parade will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, on Jayhawk Boulevard between the Chi Omega fountain on West Campus Road and the Adams Alumni Center on Oread Avenue. Manning also will be recognized at halftime of the homecoming football game between KU and Baylor University. The game will start at 1 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.

Manning, who played basketball at KU from 1985 to 1988, was named the national player of the year in 1988 and set records as KU's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Manning enjoyed 15 seasons in the NBA and played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, Utah Jazz, Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons.
