KU Honors Program announces names of more than 1,500 students for fall 2003

LAWRENCE -- The Honors Program at the University of Kansas has announced the names of more than 1,500 top undergraduate students participating in the program during fall 2003.

"Honors students actively pursue the strongest educational experience they can while at KU," said John Gronbeck-Tedesco, acting director of the honors program. "We take pride in announcing the names of this year˙s Honors Program students."

Each fall approximately 300 freshmen are invited to participate in KU˙s Honors Program based on their unweighted high school grade-point averages, standardized test scores and application essays. To remain active in the Honors Program, students must maintain a GPA of 3.25.

Located in Nunemaker Center at KU, the program provides staff to advise students of KU opportunities that encourage research, study abroad, and participation in cultural and social activities and in community service. Honors Program students are eligible to enroll in honors courses that are small and encourage group discussion.

Honors students also are encouraged to work on research projects or apply for scholarships, internships or fellowships with the help of their honors adviser, faculty in their major departments and Honors Program staff. Each year, more than 60 undergraduate awards are available for original research projects supervised by KU faculty and administered through the Honors Program. Students compete to receive $500 to fund research during the academic year and at least $1,000 for summer research projects.

The Honors Program staff also prepares students for highly prestigious and competitive Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Truman, Goldwater and Udall national scholarships. In fall 2004, KU students won a Rhodes and a Marshall scholarship. Since 1904, 24 KU students have become Rhodes scholars, and since 1965, nine KU students have received Marshall scholarships. Both scholarships provide for graduate study in England.

Honors Program advisers also assist students applying for National Science Foundation, Mellon, Javits, Gates, Churchill and Hertz national graduate fellowship competitions and for the Rotary Ambassadorial and USA Today academic team undergraduate competitions.

This year˙s Honors Program students represent 77 of the 105 counties in Kansas and 34 states.

Students' names are listed online in the following format:
