'Surprise Patrol' delivers final 2003 Kemper Award at KU Medical Center

LAWRENCE -- The "Surprise Patrol" finished its work for this year today when it presented Allen Greiner, assistant professor of family medicine, with a $5,000 Kemper Award for excellence in teaching and advising.

Twenty University of Kansas professors have received 2003 Kemper Awards, worth a combined $100,000.

The W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence recognize outstanding teachers and advisers at KU as determined by a seven-member selection committee. Now in the eighth year of a 10-year program, the awards were established by a $500,000 fund from the William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee, and $500,000 in matching funds from the KU Endowment Association.

Today's winner:

K. Allen Greiner, School of Medicine

Assistant Professor Allen Greiner received his medical degree from the KU School of Medicine in 1995 and joined the medical school faculty in 1999. Greiner has helped revise course curricula in addition to serving on the Hospital Ethics Committee. He also is a member of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board for the Medical Center Research Institute.

In 2001, the medical student body honored him with the Student Voice Teaching Award. One colleague said, "Allen has a passion for teaching that drives him to continually seek teaching techniques that will enhance students' understanding of topics being taught." This dedication also drove him to become faculty adviser for the JayDoc Free Clinic. In that position, Greiner supervises the 70 medical students who run the primary care clinic. Greiner also is a reviewer for several medical journals.
