Fourth annual Collage Concert highlights talent, diversity of KU fine arts school

LAWRENCE -- The School of Fine Arts at the University of Kansas will celebrate its diverse, talented community with the fourth annual Collage Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Lied Center.

The Collage Concert showcases works by KU fine arts visual- and performing-arts students and faculty in a nonstop 90-minute format. The concert will bring together the departments of art, design, and music and dance, as well as the Lied Center of Kansas. Proceeds will benefit the School of Fine Arts.

The idea behind the event is symbolic of collages, artistic compositions made of a variety of materials and objects.

The festivities will begin with the Fine Arts Advisory Board's pre-concert reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. in the Seymour Gallery at the Lied Center. This third annual fund-raiser will benefit the Fine Arts Educational Enhancement Fund. Area artists, members of the Fine Arts Advisory Board and notable figures in Lawrence's art community, including regional artists Louis Copt and Jane Pronko; Lawrence Arts Center director Ann Evans; and arts editor Mindie Paget of the Lawrence Journal-World, have created and donated artwork and collages. Fine arts faculty also have donated special items to the auction, including voice lessons with Joyce Castle, professor of music; ceramic lessons with David Vertacnik, associate professor of design; and a digital imaging demonstration from Peter Thompson, professor of art.

Tickets to the pre-concert reception and silent auction cost $50 and are available by calling (785) 864-3421. Those attending the reception will receive special seating for the concert.

Tickets to the concert are $10 for the general public and $5 for students and seniors, and are available at all KU box offices: the Lied Center, (785) 864-2787; Murphy Hall, (785) 864-3982; and SUA in the Kansas Union, (785) 864-SHOW.
