KU law student elected to lead international law society

LAWRENCE -- A University of Kansas law student from Wichita has been elected president of the International Law Students Association.

Chandra R. Cranmer, a third-year law student from Wichita, was chosen as president of the International Law Students Association at the group's annual spring conference in April in Washington, D.C. Her term began in June and runs through June 2004. Cranmer plans to graduate from the KU School of Law in December 2003. She plans a career in business litigation and has an interest in international law and cross-cultural business negotiations.

ILSA is the student affiliate of the American Society of International Law, the largest and best-known global society of lawyers having involvement in international law. ILSA has more than 150 chapters in more than 90 countries. ILSA is responsible for the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, in which more than 500 teams from around the world compete.

Cranmer, a Wichita native and the granddaughter of David and Joyce Cranmer, graduated from Maize High School and from KU with a bachelor's degree in business administration, a dean's certificate in international business and an emphasis in finance in 2000. She served as north central regional director for ILSA, president of KU's International Law Society chapter and treasurer of KU's Women in Law chapter during the 2002-03 school year.

As president, Cranmer will, among other duties, oversee the production of organizational mailings, contribute articles to its quarterly journal and organize its two annual conferences.

Cranmer said her goals as president include revitalizing the organization's Sister School program, which connects foreign schools with ILSA chapter schools in the United States and allows them access to more resources, such as libraries that are larger than those that may be available in the school's country. She also wants to increase chapter participation at the organization's fall and spring conferences, recruit more teams to the Jessup moot court competition and revamp the ILSA speaker's bureau.
