LAWRENCE -- A new University of Kansas distance-learning course on environmental
literature is now available through KU Continuing Education's Independent Study
program.
ENGL 203 Topics in Reading and Writing: Environmental
Literature provides a survey of American environmental thought from the 19th
century to the present. This
topic-focused course examines various themes in environmental writing and the
development of environmental thought and philosophies. Readings include classic
texts by Thoreau, Leopold and Carson, as well as the activist novel “The
Monkey Wrench Gang” and excerpts from William Least Heat-Moon's “PrairyErth.”
This three-hour course is available in a print format with additional online
readings. This course will be of interest to students in environmental studies,
American studies, American history, natural sciences and philosophy, as well
as to environmental activists.
