LAWRENCE -- The Hall Center for the Humanities at the University of Kansas seeks nominations for the Byron Caldwell Smith Award. The award is given biennially to an individual who lives in or is employed in Kansas and who has written an outstanding book published in the calendar year of 2003 or 2004. The $2,000 award will be presented in September 2005 in Lawrence.
The Byron Caldwell Smith Award was established at the bequest of Kate Stephens,
a former KU student and one of the university's first women professors. As
an undergraduate at KU, Stephens learned to love the study of Greek language
and literature from Professor Byron Caldwell Smith. In his name she established
this award.
Send a letter of nomination, which must include a statement regarding the
nominee's eligibility, the nominee's address and telephone number, and three
nonreturnable
copies of the nominee's book to:

Self-nominations are accepted.
Deadline: 5 p.m. March 1, 2005.

A committee appointed by the Hall Center director is responsible for the
selection of award recipients. The recipient of the Byron Caldwell Smith
Book Award will
deliver a public talk on the subject of the book.
