KU to honor Duke TIP students, parents at June 6 program

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas will host a recognition program for about 500 of the more than 890 Kansas seventh-grade students selected for the 2004 Duke University Talent Identification Program.

The program will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at the Lied Center at KU. Karl Brooks, interim director of environmental studies and assistant professor of history and environmental studies, will give the keynote address.

Fred Rodriguez, associate dean of education, will serve as moderator.

Selection to TIP is based on college entrance exam scores that are in the top 5 percent while the students are in middle school. The Duke program is in its 24th year, and this is the sixth year KU has hosted the state recognition ceremony.

Each student receives a medallion. Information tables to answer students' and parents' questions about various programs and activities at KU will be available in the Lied Center lobby.

TIP is a nonprofit education program dedicated to the cultivation and education of America's talented youth.
