LAWRENCE -- A steam tunnel replacement project at the University of Kansas will close Jayhawk Boulevard for almost a week while contractors construct a bypass road for vehicles.
Jayhawk Boulevard from 13th to 14th streets will be closed from noon Tuesday, June 1, through 8 a.m. Monday, June 7. During that time, workers will build a temporary one-lane road to accommodate southbound traffic for the duration of the project. Gold parking permits will be honored in the Mississippi Street Parking Garage.
During work, the tunnel addition will completely close 14th Street between Jayhawk Boulevard and Alumni Place.
The project will replace a steam tunnel that an inspection revealed was unstable.
