KU to observe International Education Week Nov. 14-19

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas joins universities across the country to observe International Education Week Nov. 14-19.

About 1,700 international students are enrolled at KU. Each year 1,400 students from KU and universities throughout the country study abroad through KU's program.

Among the public events and displays in observance of International Education Week:

-- A performance by chamber orchestra Camerata Sweden at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Lied
Center.

-- Professor Maggie Childs, associate professor of East Asian languages, will talk about Lawrence's relationship with its Japanese sister city, Hiratsuka, at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the Kansas Union International Room.

-- KU students, faculty and scholars will present “Stories, Songs and Skits From Not Far Away,” a program of folk tales, traditional music and dance, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the Oread Bookstore in the Kansas Union.

-- Ralph Inforzato, Japanese External Trade Organization director for business development, will speak about “World Perspectives in Economic Trade” at noon Thursday, Nov. 18, in the Kansas Union International Room.

-- Professor Ali Mazrui of the State University of New York-Binghamton will present “A Crisis in Afro-Arab Relations?: Between Al-Qaeda and Darfur” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in 110 Budig Auditoria.

-- The photo exhibit “Picture the World” will be displayed at the art gallery in the Kansas Union Nov. 15-19.

-- The Center for International Business and Research will have a display of its study abroad opportunities in the Koch Student Commons in Summerfield Nov. 15-19.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway will sign a proclamation declaring International Education Week at KU. Lawrence Mayor Mike Rundle will sign a proclamation at the City Commission meeting on Nov. 16.

International Education Week is sponsored by International Programs, the Office of International Student and Scholar Services, Kansas Memorial Unions, Coca-Cola, Phi Beta Delta, the Area Studies Centers and CIBER.
