LAWRENCE -- The University Band at the University of Kansas will perform a variety of works in a lively concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Lied Center of Kansas.
James Hudson, associate director of bands, will direct the performance, with
Langston Hemenway and Stuart O’Neill as guest conductors.
The program will include the following selections:
“
Sundance” by Frank Ticheli. This work was commissioned for a Texas band
festival in 1997.
“
He's Gone Away” by Robert E. Jager, arranged by Stuart O'Neill. This selection
will feature O’Neill as guest conductor.
“
Third Suite” by Paul Yaeger.
“
Down a Country Lane” by Aaron Copland. This work, from Copland's Youth
Orchestra Series, was originally a piano piece, and it begins with a flowing,
pastoral melody in the upper woodwinds and vibraphone. The climax, near the
end, is at fortissimo volume that is gradually reduced to a very low level
before
concluding.
“
English Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughn Williams. Williams, one of the
most eminent of contemporary English composers, is known throughout the world
for his splendid choral and orchestral works. His interest in wind band has
nowhere found more satisfactory expression of his compositional language than
this suite.
The score is remarkable for its originality and instrumentation. This selection
will feature Hemenway as guest conductor.
“
Der Regimentskinder” by Julius Fucik. Fucik wrote the famous “Entry
of the Gladiators” march. He became a prolific composer, with more than
400 works to his credit.
