KU to honor 228 high-school seniors from Shawnee Mission district on Oct. 27

LAWRENCE -- Students from five Kansas high schools will be honored Wednesday, Oct. 27, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association.

A total of 228 seniors from Shawnee Mission U.S.D. 512 high schools in Johnson County will be named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 7:30 p.m. program at the Jewish Community Campus of Greater Kansas City, 5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park.

Honorees' names are listed below.

Stuart Bell, dean of the School of Engineering, will speak. Kansas Alumni Association representative Carolyn Barnes, director of the Kansas Honors Program, is in charge of award presentations.

The program is free for all attendees, and a reception will follow.

Joe Kurtzman of Overland Park will be the site coordinator. High school coordinators will be Kevin Latinis, Leawood, Shawnee Mission East; Joseph M. Nielsen, Shawnee, Shawnee Mission North; Robert Thompson, Shawnee, Shawnee Mission Northwest; Kathy MacNaughton, Leawood, Shawnee Mission South; and Melissa Boos Nielsen, Shawnee, Shawnee Mission West.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 89,875 students in the top 10 percent of the Kansas high-school senior classes.
