KU to honor 237 seniors from Douglas, Jefferson and Leavenworth counties

LAWRENCE -- Students from 17 Kansas high schools will be honored Wednesday, Sept. 22, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association.

The 237 students, seniors from Douglas, Jefferson and Leavenworth counties, will be named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 7:30 p.m. program at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive, Lawrence.

Honorees are listed below.

Barbara Ballard, associate director for outreach at the Dole Institute of Politics, will speak. Kansas Alumni Association representative Jennifer Jackson Sanner, senior vice president for communications and editor of Kansas Alumni magazine, is in charge of award presentations.

The program is free. A reception will follow.

Karen Van Blaricum, Lawrence, is the site coordinator. Teresa Dillon and David Johnston, also of Lawrence, are Douglas County coordinators. Cynthia C. Lewis, Lecompton, is Jefferson County coordinator. Tom Throne, Lansing, and Bianca Elliott, Linwood, are Leavenworth County coordinators.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. It has recognized 89,875 students in the top 10 percent of Kansas high-school senior classes.
