KU ROTC students participate in Veterans Day commemmorative vigil
LAWRENCE -- Members of Army, Navy and Marine ROTC units at the University of Kansas participated in a Nov. 11 Veterans Day candlelight vigil at the campus Korean and Vietnam war memorials on Memorial Drive.
KU's Arnold Air Society, Ennis C. Whitehead Squadron, Air Force ROTC, led the ceremonies with a flag retreat.
Veterans Day commemorative events at KU included a program that featured as speakers a father/son Marine duo who had served together in Iraq. U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Christopher Phelps of Shawnee served a seven-month tour this year with his father, Master Gunnery Sgt. Kendall Phelps of Silver Lake, helping Iraqis rebuild infrastructure in their country. Maj. Phelps is a master's degree student at KU in international affairs with emphasis in Middle Eastern studies. He received a bachelor's in literature in 1993.
