KU to offer East Asia Institute in Derby for teachers in central Kansas districts
LAWRENCE -- For the first time in its history, the Kansas Consortium for Teaching about Asia at the University of Kansas will offer its East Asia Institute for Teachers in more than 60 central Kansas school districts for three weekends in June in Derby.
Teachers attending the institute will have the chance to increase their teaching power about East Asia while increasing spending power -- for themselves and for their schools. Teachers receive a $250 stipend upon successfully completing the institute and a $300 grant to purchase East Asian materials for their schools.
In addition, teachers may attend for free and receive:
- $200 worth of books for personal use
- $250 stipend for implementing these lesson plans during the 2005-06 academic year
- One-year subscription to "Education About Asia"
- Opportunity for subsidized travel in the United States and abroad
The institute will be offered June 10-11, 17-18 and 24-25 at USD 260 offices in Derby. Classes will meet from 3 to 6 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Teachers may receive professional development credit for this 30-hour course. Teachers may audit the institute for free or enroll for two hours of graduate credit for a fee.
Organized and run by KU's Center for East Asian Studies, the institute provides the content and resources to enable teachers to enhance the teaching of China, Japan and Korea across the curriculum. Topics taught correspond with advanced placement and national standards in world history, and they will benefit geography, literature and art teachers as well as school librarians and teachers of gifted children.
