KU to honor 224 high school seniors from Shawnee Mission district Oct. 11

LAWRENCE -- Students from five Kansas high schools will be honored Tuesday, Oct. 11, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association.

A total of 224 seniors from Shawnee Mission district high schools will be named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 7 p.m. program at the Jewish Community Center of greater Kansas City, 5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park.

Honorees' names are listed below.

Dr. Roy Jensen, director of the Kansas Masonic Cancer Institute at the KU Medical Center, will speak. Kansas Alumni Association representative Jennifer Sanner, senior vice president for communications, is in charge of award presentations. The program is free for all attendees, and a reception will follow.

Joe Kurtzman, Overland Park, will serve as the site coordinator. School coordinators will be: Kevin Latinis, Leawood, Shawnee Mission East; Joseph M Nielsen, Shawnee, Shawnee Mission North; Robert W. Thompson, Shawnee, Shawnee Mission Northwest; Kathy Macnaughton, Leawood, Shawnee Mission South; and Melissa Boos Neilsen, Shawnee, Shawnee Mission West.

The KU Endowment Association and the Kansas Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 95,794 students in the top 10 percent of high school senior classes throughout the state of Kansas.
