KU to honor 230 top high school seniors from three counties in Lawrence on Sept. 13

LAWRENCE — Students from 17 Kansas high schools will be honored Wednesday, Sept. 13, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment.

A total of 230 seniors from high schools in Douglas, Jefferson and Leavenworth counties will be recognized for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars at 7 p.m. in the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive on the KU campus in Lawrence.

The Kansas Honors Program began in 1971 and will honor its 100,000th student this year. Scholars rank in the top 10 percent of their high school senior class and are selected regardless of curricula, major, occupational plans or higher-education goals. Honorees’ names are listed below by high school and hometown ZIP code.

During the ceremony, each student will receive an American Heritage Dictionary in hardback and CD versions, presented by Heath Peterson, director of Kansas Programs for the KU Alumni Association.

Stephen R. McAllister, professor of law, will speak to the students, their parents and guests.

Honored students will be guests of the Alumni Association and KU Endowment; parents and area alumni are welcome to attend. The program is free.

Community volunteers collect reservations, coordinate details and serve as local contacts for the event. County coordinators are Teresa Dillon and David Johnston, both of Lawrence, for Douglas County; Bianca Elliot of Linwood for Leavenworth County; and Cynthia Lewis of Lecompton for Jefferson County.
