More than 5,000 KU students receive privately funded scholarships for 2006-07

LAWRENCE — More than 5,000 University of Kansas students will benefit from about $23.5 million in privately funded scholarships, fellowships and awards during the 2006-07 academic year.

So far, 7,290 scholarships have been awarded. Many students receive more than one scholarship. KU divides many scholarship awards between the fall and spring semesters of the academic year, and there are some students who receive scholarship support for the summer term as well.

Virtually all scholarships, awards and fellowships awarded by KU come from private contributions to KU Endowment, the official fundraising foundation for KU.

Though KU Endowment raises support for scholarships and other student aid, KU determines the distribution of available support. The estimated $23.5 million in support to be distributed during the academic year represents a 13 percent increase over last year. The figure fluctuates from year to year based on several factors, such as the number of students who apply for scholarships and receive them, the investment performance of endowed scholarship funds and new gifts for scholarships.

The students who have so far received need- or merit-based scholarships are listed below by hometown. The students represent 101 of Kansas’ 105 counties, 43 other states and the District of Columbia, and 50 other countries.
