KU announces 85 graduates of Certified Public Managers program

TOPEKA — Shawnee County Sheriff Dick Barta congratulated 85 graduates of the University of Kansas Public Management Center’s Certified Public Managers program during a Dec. 8 ceremony at the Maner Conference Center in Topeka.

The graduates, who began their course in January, represented 45 local, county, state or federal agencies from across Kansas.

The Certified Public Managers program is offered by KU’s Public Management Center in partnership with the Mid-America Regional Council, the League of Kansas Municipalities, the Kansas Association of Counties and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Graduate School. The graduates will join nearly 700 previous graduates of the KU program since it was implemented in 1993.

The students represent management at all levels of government. Completion of the course requires three days of classroom attendance each month for one calendar year beginning in January. The curriculum provides a foundation of knowledge and skills in management practices, offers opportunities for professional and personal growth and fosters effective management practices in government organizations.

“CPM students represent the very best in public service,” said Charles Jones, director of KU’s Public Management Center. “While managing full-time jobs, CPM students and their sponsoring agencies somehow find the time and energy to hone their management skills to improve public service in Kansas.”

The 2006 Certified Public Managers program included courses in Topeka, Olathe and for the first time, the course was offered in southwestern Kansas with classes in Liberal, Dodge City and Garden City.

“Our southwest Kansas course was so successful, we’re offering it again in 2007,” said Jones.
