KU business students rank in top 10 in Deloitte tax contest

Allen Ford, Larry D. Horner/KPMG distinguished teaching professor of accounting, served as the KU team's faculty adviser.

LAWRENCE — A team of University of Kansas School of Business graduate students placed in the top 10 in 2006 Deloitte Tax Case Study Competition during the fall semester.

Ten teams emerged from a field of more than 40 colleges and universities competing at regional sites this fall. The KU team was one of four to receive an honorable mention award. The top six teams competed nationally in Orlando, Fla., in November.

Each of the KU team members received a $100 award, and KU’s School of Business received $1,000.

Allen Ford, Larry D. Horner/KPMG distinguished teaching professor of accounting, served as the KU team's faculty adviser. “I am very proud of the team's accomplishments,” Ford said. “They are all great students and performed well. They should be pleased.”

In the competition, student teams compete by preparing a solution for a hypothetical corporate taxpayer in five hours. The only reference guides available are the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. The competition tests various tax topics, time management skills and team collaboration.

The Deloitte Foundation, a non-profit arm of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, sponsors the competition.

The members of the KU graduate tax team are all master’s degree students with a concentration in tax. They are listed here by their hometowns, their level in school and degree program, their parents names (when available), their undergraduate degrees and their high schools.
