University observes day of mourning; closed Tuesday

The University of Kansas' Lawrence, Edwards and Medical Center campuses will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 2, a national day of mourning for President Gerald Ford, who died Dec. 26. The university will operate on a holiday schedule.

President George W. Bush declared the national day of mourning and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said that all state offices would be closed Tuesday. She urged Kansans to “take a moment to remember the life and legacy of President Ford.”

The university is on winter break until Friday, Jan. 19, so no classes will be interrupted. Academic departments and other units that serve students and the general public will be closed as well.

The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics is hosting a display in honor of the former president and a memorial registry to be sent to the Ford family. The public can view the display and sign the book during regular business hours, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and noon-5 p.m. Sundays, though Friday, Jan. 26. The institute will be closed New Year's Day but will be open regular hours on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

University Carillonneur Elizabeth Berghout will play a concert in tribute to Ford from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. The concert at the Memorial Campanile and Carillon will be free and open to the public.

Kansas Public Radio will broadcast National Public Radio's live coverage of Ford's funeral from Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The broadcast will begin at 9 a.m. and is expected to last approximately two hours.

KPR, licensed to KU, broadcasts on KANU-FM, 91.5, in Lawrence; KANH-FM, 89.7, in Emporia; KANV-FM, 91.3,in Olsburg-Junction City; and K210CR-FM, 89.9, in Atchison. KPR can be heard on the Internet at kpr.ku.edu. KPR also operates KPR-2, a news-talk channel on HD Radio
