Dole Institute to host 60 high school seniors for youth civic leadership program

LAWRENCE — The Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas will host more than 60 high school seniors from across Kansas who are participating in the first “Youth Civic Leadership Institute,” a program designed to foster appreciation and involvement in public service.

“Outstanding students have been chosen by their high school administrators based on the students’ commitment to civic engagement and interest in public service,” said Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute. “The program will consist of a variety of speakers, outings, workshops and brainstorming sessions focused on making public service at all levels accessible and understandable.”

The Dole Institute will host the free program July 12-14. Students and counselors will spend two nights on the KU campus in a residence hall.

“A highlight will be a visit to the state Capitol to meet with Kansas government leaders,” said Barbara Ballard, who is associate director for civic programming at the institute and a state representative from Lawrence’s 44th district. “Our inaugural group of Youth Civic Leadership contains some of the best and brightest of their generation. It is in our nation’s best interest that they become familiar with our system of government, and many opportunities for public service, in a way that empowers them to achieve their greatest potential.”
