High school juniors and seniors learn pharmacy procedures at KU camp

LAWRENCE — Twenty-three high school juniors and seniors from four states were in Lawrence this week to participate in the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy summer camp.

Ten boys and 13 girls from Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Nebraska are learning what pharmacists do in their daily routines; the education and skills needed to become a pharmacist; and the code of ethics and professionalism standards that guide the pharmacy profession, said Gene Hotchkiss, associate dean of the pharmacy school and camp program coordinator.

In addition to learning about career opportunities in the pharmacy profession and the pharmacy education curriculum at KU, the camp participants will learn how to conduct blood glucose, cholesterol and hypertension screenings, prescription compounding techniques and the prescription dispensing process. Camp participants will also spend one day touring area hospital, retail and specialty pharmacies as well as pharmacy research facilities at KU.

The program also provides information about academic and career planning for a future in the pharmacy profession.

“Our pharmacy camp program traditionally attracts highly qualified students, many of whom decide to attend KU to pursue a degree in pharmacy,” Hotchkiss said.
