Kansas architects recognize three KU student projects with citation awards

A.J. Naeger, Lawrence senior, used his advanced welding skills to develop and execute a one-of-a-kind golf design entry with a perforated stainless steel putting surface held to the contoured plywood frame with spot-welded fasteners. All other design entries used artificial turf.

Freestanding sunshade research project took its Pterodactyl name from the winged dinosaur. KU students used advanced digital design and fabrication to create the curving roof structure from simple sheets of plywood.

New Orleans Housing Prototype for post-Hurricane Katrina housing design earned the nickname ÒcaterpillarÓ for its rounded form, banded sunshade system and platform to elevate it above flood waters.

LAWRENCE — Three design projects by 10 University of Kansas students in the School of Architecture and Urban Design won student awards at the American Institute of Architects Kansas chapter annual honors and awards banquet Oct. 26 in Wichita.

Also at the Wichita event, a team representing the KU chapter of American Institute of Architecture Students won second-place for its golf course design/build project to benefit the Kansas AIA Foundation. The “Who Can Build the Best Golf Hole” challenge was open to students and professionals and raised funds for scholarships for KU and Kansas State University architecture students.

The AIA Kansas juried students-only competition is open to students in architecture programs at KU and K-State and recognizes the best of student architectural design. AIA Kansas also presented its Excellence in Design professional awards at the banquet. John Gaunt, dean of KU’s architecture school, was master of ceremonies for the banquet.

Jurors reviewed 11 student entries with the option of citing projects with honor, merit or citation recognition. The jurors included architects Eugene Mackey and Clay Phillips of Mackey Mitchell Associates and Bill Bowersox of Powers Bowersox Associates Inc., all of St. Louis; and Patrick Tighe of Tighe Architecture, Santa Monica, Calif.

KU’s citation award-winning student projects are:

— The St. Louis Opera House by Megan Hunziker, Mike O’Donnell and Matthew R. Pauly was created for a design studio class team-taught by Stephen Grabow, professor of architecture; Wojciech Lesnikowski, Don Hatch Distinguished Professor of Architecture; and Bob Coffeen, adjunct associate professor in architecture. The overall contemporary design contrasts a light, transparent high-visibility rectilinear pavilion envelope for a dynamically sculptured performance auditorium. This project also won the Best Unbuilt Project award in the annual Monsters of Design Competition in Kansas City, Mo.

— Pterodactyl, a freestanding shade structure design by Marshall Hilton, Andrew Hoef, Kai Sun Luk and Emily Moisan, was part of a research project using advanced digital design and fabrication in a third-year studio class taught by Rob Corser, assistant professor of architecture. The project design name comes from its resemblance to wings of the Pterodactyl flying dinosaurs.

— The New Orleans Housing Prototype by Jared Bertels, Lincoln Lewis and Dani May was one of the design projects for a spring 2006 class with Paola Sanguinetti, associate professor of architecture. The design previously won a citation in the New Orleans House Prototype International Competition for students. Contest sponsors Architectural Record magazine and Tulane University sought affordable housing solutions after Hurricane Katrina. Students were asked to design a three-bedroom house easy to construct in a developed urban area. Sponsors looked for a dwelling that was elevated above flood waters and suited to the local climate and environment. Kansas AIA jurors noted how well the KU design related to traditional neighborhood structures and focused on use of affordable, sustainable materials that included strawboard plywood, recycled aluminum and bamboo flooring.

In the golf design challenge, the KU entry was unique in its use of a perforated sheet metal putting surface. The other six entries used artificial turf. Advanced welding skills of A.J. Naeger allowed the team to develop and execute the project. Others on the team included Justin Cratty, Laura Foster, Katie Hamilton, Lincoln Lewis, Devin Norton, Nathan Otis, Suzanne Petersen and Mirabela Ticu.
