KU chancellor issues statement on death of Stan Stauffer
LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway issued the following condolence statement in response to the death today of Stan Stauffer, former chairman of the board and president of Stauffer Communications. He was 86.
“On behalf of the entire university community, I extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to his wife, Madeline, and the entire Stauffer family. Stan Stauffer’s gifts to the university as a volunteer, donor and adviser will not be forgotten, notably in journalism where his support for the cutting-edge technology of Internet journalism will have a deep and lasting impact for future generations of journalists.”
Biography:
Stauffer, who graduated from KU’s journalism school in 1942, was the former chairman of the board and president of Stauffer Communications Inc. Before it sold its properties to Morris Communications Inc., Stauffer Communications owned and operated daily and weekly newspapers and television and radio stations in 15 states, including the Topeka Capital-Journal and WIBW television and radio in Topeka. His family has provided significant financial support to KU’s journalism program for many years. The school’s main building, Stauffer-Flint Hall, was named in part after Stauffer’s father, Oscar Stauffer.
Stan Stauffer was a member of the KU Alumni Association national board in the 1960s and was a long-time trustee of the William Allen White Foundation Board. He was a member of the Chancellors Club, contributed to the Kansas Honors Program and in 2002, he and his wife, Madeline, gave $200,000 to to create the Stan and Madeline Stauffer Multimedia Newsroom. The newsroom allows journalism students from all media specialties to come together in one location to produce television, radio, online and print news, features and in-depth reports.
