KU theater design students earn opportunity to exhibit abroad
LAWRENCE — Two University of Kansas students and one KU graduate have been selected to have their work shown at an international exhibition that represents the best in theater design.
Robbie Jones, spring 2006 master’s degree graduate in scenography from Garden City; Kelly Vogel, master’s degree student in scenography from Tonganoxie; and Timothy Boeshaar, senior in theatre design from Mission Hills, brought national recognition to KU’s Department of Design when the United States Institute for Theatre Technology Inc. chose them to participate in the Prague Quadrennial. The event will be held in June in the Czech Republic.
Jones, Vogel and Boeshaar were honored for their set design for “The Fantasticks,” a musical produced in summer 2005 at KU.
“I am honored to be a part of such a prestigious group of designers chosen for this award,” Jones said.
The Prague Quadrennial, which began in 1967, is held every four years. The event features thousands of theater designs from more than 50 participating countries and is a meeting place for theater artists from around the world. The Prague Quadrennial also displays professional designs from each of the participating countries and exhibits of theater architecture. A select group of 23 colleges and universities have been invited to participate in 2007.
Those attending the Prague Quadrennial will also have the opportunity to participate in scenography workshops and seminars, and will be able to meet international colleagues and professional scenography designers.
This is the fifth time the KU scenography/theater design program has been represented at the Prague Quadrennial.
