KUMC Continuing Education offers a trio of diabetes programs
LAWRENCE — November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and the University of Kansas Medical Center is presenting a series of events for healthcare professionals and the public about major developments in diabetes research, including new technologies and treatments for the disease.
“It’s Your Health & Life: Managing Your Diabetes” is a two-part program scheduled for Nov. 11 at the Overland Park Convention Center. A diabetes management conference designed for healthcare professionals is set for the morning, with a series of workshops open to the public beginning at 1:30 p.m.
“This two-part conference illustrates KU Medical Center’s commitment to provide continuing education to professionals, inform the public and find a cure for diabetes,” said Dale Grube, associate dean of KU Continuing Education.
Topics to be addressed throughout the day include new and developing cures for diabetes, recent diabetes research findings, new management practices and the latest technological advances, such as artificial pancreas, islet cell transplants, inhaled insulin and the chronic care model.
The event is being co-sponsored by the Diabetes Freedom Education Alliance and KU Medical Center Continuing Education and will feature diabetes experts from KU Medical Center, KU School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, and the Mayo Clinic.
The KU Medical Center is also offering a free public forum, “Diabetes: Everything You Need to Know or Want to Ask,” from 7:30 a.m. to noon Nov. 18 at the KU Medical Center Student Center in Kansas City, Kan. The event is part of the “Saturday Morning at KU Med” information series.
Patrick W. Ayers, executive director of the American Diabetes Association in the Kansas City area, will present updates in diabetes research. Several topics will be covered by KU Medical Center professors, including new approaches and future advances in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes.
“Our ‘Saturday Morning at KU Med’ series is presented in a public forum, which gives everyone a chance to interact with experts in a relaxed setting,” Grube said. “It is a unique way to inform the public about diabetes, a disease that affects so many people. It’s a chance for the public to ask questions about topics that concern them and to learn what our research is doing to combat diabetes.”
