South Asian recording artist to perform Nov. 13 at Kansas Union

LAWRENCE — Recording artist Salman Ahmad will perform at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at the Kansas Union Ballroom at the University of Kansas. The International Education Week event is free and open to the public.

The evening will include a screening of his documentary “Muslims in America: It’s My Country Too,” a question and answer session and a musical performance featuring Ahmad and tabla player Saleem Khan.

A doctor by training, Ahmad turned to music and founded South Asia’s biggest rock band, Junoon, which has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. Ahmad’s unique message presented through music, film and spoken word earned him an invitation to the Clinton Global Initiative, hosted by former President Clinton in September.

He is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, acting as the U.S. national spokesperson in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

While in the Midwest, Ahmad will appear today at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators Regional II Conference; Thursday, Nov. 9, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City; and Saturday, Nov. 11, at Pittsburg State University.

His appearance at KU is sponsored by the Office of International Programs, the Pakistani Student Association, Coca-Cola and Student Senate.
