KU, Haskell students present research at science society’s annual conference

Matthew Moreno, senior in biochemistry, left, presents his research project to a judge at the annual conference of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

LAWRENCE — Students from the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University presented their research at the annual conference of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, held Oct. 26-29 in Tampa, Fla.

Seven undergraduate students in KU’s Bioscience Initiative Program and one student in Haskell’s Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement Program made presentations. Each student completed a research project under the direction of a KU faculty mentor.

The students’ research and conference attendance were supported by the Bioscience Initiative at KU, the Bridges to the Future Program at Haskell and the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement Program at Haskell. The three programs are funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services.

The society provides conference activities for students, educators, administrators and researchers in science. Its annual conference offers a national forum for investigation of questions related to the theme and the development of a new generation of leaders who will be instrumental in shaping future directions and applications of scientific research.
