KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The 175 students at the University of Kansas School of Medicine who began their studies this year will be the first class trained within the school’s new curriculum, which aims to more effectively integrate basic science education and hands-on clinical experiences.
Members of the Class of 2010 were selected from a competitive pool of more than 1,679 applicants to the state’s only medical school. According to Barbara Atkinson, executive vice chancellor of the KU Medical Center and executive dean of the School of Medicine, 86 percent of the class is from Kansas and 29 percent of the class is from rural Kansas.
“We have been working particularly hard to prepare for these students,” Atkinson said. “We have invested in technology as never before and designed education programs using an interdisciplinary, patient-centered model.”
The curriculum is designed to foster the skills patients need in their doctors. Students will get direct experiences with patients earlier during their basic science education. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and people skills plus solving problems, working in teams and utilizing technology while never losing sight of the human element in medicine.
As part of the new curriculum, these first-year students received tablet computers to give them portable electronic access to educational materials in the lecture halls, small-group rooms, study areas, libraries and clinical settings.
Since 1905, the KU School of Medicine has trained more than 9,500 physicians. Many continue to practice in rural and urban Kansas towns as well as neighboring states.
Members of the Class of 2010 are listed below by home county or state, level in medical school, gender and, when available, parents’ names and high schools.
