Well-known child and adolescent experts to headline KU psychology conference
LAWRENCE — How can psychologists help children with ADHD develop healthy social relationships? How can they intervene effectively with children whose reactions to trauma or disaster persist? Answers to these and other questions that arise in the framework of clinical practice will be the focus of a University of Kansas Continuing Education conference set for Oct. 19-21 in Lawrence.
The Kansas Conference in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, titled “Translating Research into Practice,” will feature seven keynote speakers widely known in their professions.
— John F. Curry, professor and director of clinical training in the Department of Psychology at Duke University and professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center, on the place of psychotherapy in the treatment of adolescent depression.
— Mary A. Fristad, professor in psychiatry and psychology and director of research and psychological services in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at The Ohio State University, on evidence-based assessment and treatment of bipolar disorder in youth.
— Cheryl A. King, associate professor and chief psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and director of the Child and Adolescent Depression Program within the University of Michigan Depression Center, on evidence-based practices for treating youth depression and suicide risk.
— Annette M. La Greca, professor of psychology and pediatrics and the director of Clinical Training at the University of Miami, on the status of evidence-based treatments for children following disasters.
— Benjamin B. Lahey, professor of health studies and psychiatry at the University of Chicago, on the psychopathology and epidemiology of disruptive behavior disorders.
— Robert J. McMahon, professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington and director of the Child Clinical Psychology Program, on the issues, lessons learned and future directions of evidence-based practice with children and adolescents.
— Luis A. Vargas, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, on giving greater attention to culture in the practice of clinical child and adolescent psychology.
The conference also will feature nearly 100 paper and poster presentations by psychology graduate students and faculty from across the United States. Continuing education credit will be provided through the American Psychology Association.
