KU to dedicate chemistry institute named for former professor

LAWRENCE — The Department of Chemistry at the University of Kansas will dedicate the Ralph N. Adams Institute for Bioanalytical Chemistry at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Multidisciplinary Research Building on KU’s west campus.

A symposium on bioanalytical chemistry will follow at 1 p.m. in Nichols Hall, also on west campus.

The institute is named for Ralph “Buzz” Adams, KU professor emeritus of chemistry. Adams was a forerunner in solid electrode analytical chemistry and is often thought of as the father of bioanalytical chemistry. Adams was awarded many top honors for his research, and he was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1997.

The institute’s focus is to bring together individual researchers who work in related fields of science. Susan M. Lunte has been named the Ralph N. Adams Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Symposium speakers are Heather Desaire, KU assistant professor of chemistry; Lunte; Bita Moghaddam of the University of Pittsburgh; and R. Mark Wightman of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

The events are free but reservations are required. Contact Elizabeth Long, (785) 864-5206, to register. For more information, visit the chemistry department's Web site.
