KU to honor 235 seniors from 10 Sedgwick County high schools Sept. 18 in Mulvane

LAWRENCE — Students from 10 Kansas high schools will be honored Monday, Sept. 18, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment.

A total of 235 seniors from high schools in Sedgwick County will be recognized for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 7 p.m. reception program at Mulvane High School, 1900 N. Rock Road.

The Kansas Honors Program began in 1971 and will honor its 100,000th student this year. Scholars rank in the top 10 percent of their high school senior class and are selected regardless of curricula, majors, occupational plans or higher-education goals. Honorees’ are listed online by hometown ZIP code and high school at www.news.ku.edu/2006/september/1/khpmulvane.shtml.

Alumni representative Jennifer Sanner, senior vice president for communications, will present each student an American Heritage Dictionary in hardback and CD versions.

Paul Carttar, special assistant to the chancellor, will speak to the students, their parents and guests.

Honored students will be guests of the Alumni Association and KU Endowment; parents and area alumni are welcome to attend at no charge.

Community volunteers collect reservations, coordinate details and serve as local contacts for the event. Nick and Naomi Ard of Maize and Rachel and Jason Purdy of Wichita will share coordination duties for the site and the county.

The Kansas Honors Program is made possible through KU Endowment and proceeds from the Jayhawk License Plate program.
