Listen up: Audio-Reader’s annual sale offers records, CDs for a steal
LAWRENCE — It’s been called the biggest music sale of its kind in the Midwest. Whatever it’s called, “For Your Ears Only” has something for everyone.
This annual fundraiser to benefit Audio-Reader’s services for the blind and print-impaired features new and gently used record albums, CDs, books on tape, stereos, turntables, musical instruments and more. The service is based at the University of Kansas.
The sale will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, in buildings 1 and 2 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper. There is a $7 entry fee Friday for the privilege of “early bird shopping.” Live music and refreshments Friday will also be included at the James Bond-themed sale. Musical instruments, including clarinets, saxophones and an organ, will be available via silent auction Friday. Admission is free Saturday, with bargains slashed to half price at noon, $5 a bag at 2 p.m. and most items free at 3:30 p.m.
“This is an important fundraiser for Audio-Reader, but it’s also a wonderful way for people to find good music at a great price,” said Janet Campbell, director of Audio-Reader.
Most records will be available for $1 and CDs for $3. Music includes classical, jazz, rock, country, Broadway musicals and more.
The items available at the sale have been donated by individuals throughout northeast Kansas.
“We are honored to benefit from these wonderful music donations. People are willing to part with some great collections when they realize that their records will help a good cause,” said Campbell.
Other items for sale include scratched and warped records that have been recycled into bowls or clocks. New this year are notebooks with exteriors made from record album covers. The notebooks were created by Kansas Public Radio staff member Phil Wilke, who is an Audio-Reader volunteer, and his wife, Malissa.
Audio-Reader is a free reading service for the blind and print-disabled. Audio-Reader volunteers broadcast current newspapers, magazines, books and special requests to more than 6,000 listeners throughout Kansas and western Missouri. The service will celebrate its 35th anniversary this fall. For more information about Audio-Reader, visit its Web site or call (785) 864-4600.
