KU freshmen elect five Student Senate representatives

LAWRENCE — Five University of Kansas freshmen have been elected by their classmates to serve as Student Senate members for 2006-07. They join about 80 student leaders representing each of KU’s schools, campus living groups and various organizations.

This year, 33 students campaigned for the five senator positions, the highest number since the Student Senate began holding fall semester elections four years ago for senators to represent the incoming freshman class. All other Student Senate elections are held in mid-April for the next academic year.

Andrew Payne, Garden City senior and Student Senate Executive Committee chairman in charge of freshman elections, said about 700 ballots were cast for a total of 2,702 votes in the Sept. 5 and 6 elections. Payne said he estimated that about 15 percent of the freshman class voted.
