KU Band Day features musicians from area high schools, Massachusetts Street parade
LAWRENCE — More than 30 area high school marching bands will participate in the 59th annual Band Day during Family Weekend at the University of Kansas on Saturday, Sept. 9.
Band Day activities include a parade in downtown Lawrence and a performance during half-time of the KU vs. Louisiana-Monroe football game that kicks off at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. The events are hosted by the Marching Jayhawks and the Department of Music and Dance in KU’s School of Fine Arts.
The Marching Jayhawks, under the leadership of David Clemmer, director of athletic bands, will lead the parade that begins at 1:30 p.m. The parade begins at Seventh and Massachusetts streets, travels south and ends at South Park, near 11th and Massachusetts streets.
Tom Stidham, associate director of bands and Band Day coordinator, said he is looking forward to his 32nd KU Band Day.
“It is always an exiting day for the high school band members and the Marching Jayhawks. The parade down Mass. Street is something that the bands look forward to, and the fans will enjoy the patriotic music featured in this year’s half-time performance,” Stidham said.
