KU graduate Alan Mulally named president and CEO of Ford Motor Co.

Alan Mulally

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway today congratulated KU graduate Alan Mulally on his election as president and chief executive officer of the Ford Motor Co.

Mulally, who earned a bachelor’s in aerospace engineering in 1968 and a master’s in 1969, both from KU, is the second KU graduate to lead one of the nation’s top three automakers. Chrysler Corp. Chairman Emeritus and retired DaimlerChrysler AG Chairman Robert J. Eaton is a 1963 KU engineering graduate.

“Alan Mulally has soared to the top of both the aviation and now automotive industries,” Hemenway said. “Some may see Kansas roots and a KU degree as humble beginnings, but actually they are just the solid foundation needed for a remarkably successful career in two of the most innovative and competitive industries in the world. We are proud Alan Mulally is a Jayhawk.”

Mulally is a member of the advisory board of the KU School of Engineering. He has received several honors from KU including the Distinguished Engineering Service Award and the university’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Citation, in 2002.

Mulally, 61, has spent 37 years at the Boeing Co., most recently as executive vice president. He has also been president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes since 2001. Mulally is co-chair of the Washington Competitiveness Council and sits on the advisory boards of NASA, the University of Washington, KU, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. He is a member of the United States National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of England’s Royal Academy of Engineering.

After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at KU, he earned a master’s in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a 1982 Alfred P. Sloan fellow.
