Conservative cartoonist to speak at annual Media and the Law Seminar
LAWRENCE — The 20th annual Media and the Law Seminar, sponsored in part by the School of Law and Continuing Education at the University of Kansas, will take place May 4 in Kansas City, Mo.
This year’s seminar, titled “A Media Lawyer’s Guide to the Galaxy,” will feature five panels of experts who will discuss the fair use debate; the intersection of technology and privacy; attorney advertising in the digital age; how the mutating media serve as a fateful force on freedom of the press; and the future of the media lawyer. Each panel will be followed by a 10-minute discussion of the relevant insurance issues and a 10-minute question-and-answer session.
The seminar regularly draws about 300 members of the legal and journalism professions from throughout the country. The conference will be at the InterContinental hotel on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City.
Syndicated cartoonist Scott Stantis will present a luncheon speech titled “Conservative Humor: Not an Oxymoron.” Stantis is an editorial cartoonist for the Birmingham News and creator of the “Prickly City” comic strip, which is distributed nationally by Universal Press Syndicate. “Prickly City” offers a conservative perspective on political and social events.
Kansas and Missouri lawyers can receive continuing legal education credit at the seminar. The Missouri and Kansas continuing legal education commissions have approved seven credit hours, including one hour of ethics in Kansas.
The seminar is sponsored by the KU School of Law; the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association Media Law Committee; the American Bar Association TIPS Media, Privacy and Defamation Law Committee; and KU Continuing Education. Contributors are Media/Professional Insurance, First Media Insurance Specialists Inc., Universal Press Syndicate and the Kansas City Star.
