Professor to give lecture on lawyer jokes

LAWRENCE — Marc Galanter, a law professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will discuss “Learning from Lawyer Jokes” at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the Hall Center for the Humanities at the University of Kansas.

Galanter is the author of “Lowering the Bar: Lawyer Jokes and Legal Culture,” which examines the history of the lawyer joke. A review of the book in the Philadelphia Inquirer called it “hilarious and philosophical at the same time … a nifty probe of the genre.”

The John and Rylla Bosshard Professor of Law and South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the LSE Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Galanter studies litigation, lawyers and legal culture. A Fulbright scholar at the University of Delhi, he did much of his early work on the Indian legal system and is an honorary professor of the National Law School of India.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Hall Center at (785) 864-4798.

The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Public Administration, Department of Sociology and the School of Law and hosted by the Hall Center.
